“When you paint, you must always be checking yourself, your thinking.
What DO you think about it? Is it true? Does it move you? Is it coming from within, in response to what is without? Be faithful to the truth of what you are painting and you will be led.”

About the Artist

Honored three times at the Carmel Art Festival, and winner of the Monterey Plein Air Festival, Robert Lewis has been part of a number of painting competitions and exhibits across the nation. Lewis has had a long career in art as an illustrator, designer, and fine artist. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Academy Art Museum on the East Coast and is shown in several galleries. Before returning to his native California and taking up plein air landscape oil painting he worked in watercolor, scratchboard, paper sculpture, and acrylics, exhibiting his imaginative works.

Lewis has lived in nearly every region of the country from Alaska to the Deep South, from the California to Maryland. This variety of scenery has contributed to his long fascination with the enduring beauty of the landscape. Plein air painting is the perfect expression of his love of landscape and being in the landscape.

When painting en plein air Lewis paints in oil on canvas on location, finishing his paintings on site in a single sitting. His large-scale studio work is often based on his plein air work. He lives and works in Pacific Grove where he has a painting studio.
