A painting of a white balcony on a pink building at old Fishermans Wharf.

One rarely notices this building at the entrance to old Fishermans Wharf in Monterey, California, and if you do you are immediately distracted by all the comings and goings of tourists. It’s kind of a circus there. But isolate this end of the pink building and you get this lovely view with an elegant building.

Today, amid the hustle and bustle I set up in the shadow of the old Customs House across from the entrance and painted this 14″x11″ oil on canvas board. I took my time and enjoyed the company of my ol’ Dad who hung around. We talked over coffee then I painted and I could see him now at this bench, now at that bench, sunning himself with his eyes closed, lost in his 87-year-old memories.

In the meantime, the sun burned that pink into the stucco and contrasted beautifully with the blue sky. See https://www.robertlewisart.com/catalog/784 for a larger picture and more information on this piece.
