I urge you to reject and fight all attempts to deploy National Guard forces in cities without gubernatorial invitation. President Trump’s statement “A lot of people are saying, ‘Maybe we like a dictator'” reveals his dangerous pattern of “testing the waters” with provocative statements, then escalating when there’s insufficient pushback.
Unauthorized federal force deployment is a direct assault on federalism and state sovereignty—and historically a hallmark of authoritarian regimes consolidating power. Combined with Trump’s open musings about dictatorship, this represents a systematic approach to stretch democratic norms toward authoritarianism.
Democracies erode gradually through normalization of authoritarian rhetoric and systematic weakening of institutional boundaries. I urge you to mobilize Democratic leadership to categorically reject unauthorized federal deployments, use every procedural tool to block such actions, and build bipartisan coalitions defending constitutional limits on federal power.
